The History of Ross Bridge

Though Ross Bridge has been a beloved neighborhood at the heart of Birmingham for decades—the rich heritage of our enchanting community is in fact rooted in the storied past of the historic stone bridge spanning Ross Creek. Read on and you’ll discover the compelling story behind the iconic bridge at Ross Creek:

Set at a true intersection of history, merely a few years prior to the Civil War, the story of the bridge at Ross Creek began when farmer and entrepreneur James Taylor Ross fell in love with the remarkable beauty of the rolling hills of Alabama’s Shannon Valley in the year 1858. He decided to purchase 140+ acres of land in the area that would one day be called “Birmingham” in the hopes of farming cotton—a rather common crop in the state of Alabama.

A few years after James Taylor Ross and his family had settled into their new home of Alabama, near the end of the Civil War, James Taylor Ross was approached by the Confederacy with a request to build a railroad through his land. James Taylor Ross permitted the Confederacy access to his land in order to build the aforementioned railroad, as the Confederate Army needed a quick means of transporting both men and supplies to Selma, AL.

The Confederacy’s new railroad line included the construction of a stone bridge to span Ross Creek, in order to transport supplies through Brock’s Gap to the nearby railroad at Shades Mountain. Though the war has long since come to a close, the historic bridge at Ross Creek continues to stand as a a testament of good will and a symbol of perseverance to this very day.
