Packing the Perfect Picnic Basket

No one will blame you for wanting to get outside to enjoy the warm weather!  This weekend, why not try a new outdoor activity?  Packing for a picnic and heading to a shady spot with the family is a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with your kids.

First time packing a picnic basket?  Check out these tips to make sure your first-ever picnic a success!

  • When thinking about the main meal, remember, casual dishes are much easier to pack and eat.  Wraps, sandwiches and other finger foods are usually the best choice.
  • Instead of dressing sandwiches before you wrap them, bring condiments and seasonings with you so that everyone can dress their own to their liking.  Many stores will even sell miniature versions of your favorite condiments – everyone can have it their way!
  • And of course, in order to actually enjoy your meal, you’ll need to bring a picnic blanket!  Make sure to find one that’s big enough for the whole family and where everyone can sit comfortably.
  • It’s easy to forget drinks, so here’s your reminder – don’t forget the drinks!  Juice boxes, water bottles, and adult beverages are all great choices for any picnic.  Before setting out with alcoholic drinks, however, be sure to check in with your picnic park of choice to be certain they are permitted.
  • Depending on when you’ll be eating vs. when you pack your basket, you might need to bring a bag of ice or cold pack to keep everything at the right temperature.  This keeps food and drinks chilled and safe to eat.
  • Napkins and trash bags are other often-overlooked items when packing for a picnic, yet they are essentials!
